Technical
Fibres Report
A Monthly Review of Technical Fibres
This report
will provide product and market news together with analysis
from our consultancy team in support of the industry. It
will analyse developments in the global market and assess
their implications for current and future movement in the
demand and supply of industrial fibres and fabrics.
Although the old quarterly format of 'Technical Fibres
Report' allowed space for full discussion on topics
such as the auto and tyre market, we appreciate that it did
not always capture events month by month, especially in a
market such as Asia. It was decided therefore to move 'Technical
Fibres Report' onto a monthly service from April
2007. We still intend to carry discussion on the auto
and tyre businesses but we shall major on each of these in
different issues once a quarter quarter, carrying shorter
comment in the other months. Contact info@pcifibres.com
for more information.

Textile Pipeline
A Quarterly Review of Textile & Fibre Demand
"Textile Pipeline" is a review of textile and fibre demand, published quarterly by PCI - Fibres. Each issue explores a different aspect of the fibres and textile industry, and offers discussion, insight and data not available from any other source. Ideal for market analysts, industry specialists, decision makers or anyone with an interest in the demand for fibres and textiles.
For more information or to subscribe to "Textile Pipeline" please e-mail
info@pcifibres.com with your name, e-mail address and company name. We are happy to send a past issue of "Textile Pipeline" free-of-charge for your evaluation.
The Data behind "Textile Pipeline"
The numbers underlying "Textile Pipeline" are from PCI's unparalleled database. Historical mill consumption and final demand data for wool, cotton and manmade fibre (split by competing MMF fibres) extend back to 1980 for all of the PCI regions (and in some cases back to 1960). The comprehensive database for textile and apparel trade covers spun yarns, fabrics, finished textiles and apparel goods for wool, cotton and MMF - perhaps the most complete and consistent measure of global and regional textile and apparel trade available in the industry today.
This level of accurate detail is the basis for the forecasts published in "Textile Pipeline". Using PCI's unique
Textile Pipeline Stocks methodology, it is possible to estimate fibre demand at both the final consumer and mill levels. Useful not least because the "Textile Pipeline Stocks" methodology concentrates on volumes, our analysis avoids the many distortions that often arise in alternative techniques which attempt to forecast volumes by using sometimes retail pricing or very generalised economic data.

World Synthetic Fibres
Supply/Demand Report
"Red Book"
The new edition of PCI’s Red Book (World Synthetic Fibres Supply/Demand Report 2007) gives an up-to-date review of the
market, noting especially the growing influence of China. Demand prospects at consumer and mill level for all types of textile fibre
(natural and manufactured) are analysed, with production estimates that relate to existing and future capacity for the main
synthetics (acrylic, nylon, polyester). For the first time, the mill demand analysis splits out the various components of nylon and
polyester filament; that is, as textile, industrial and carpet filament, with allowance for variations such as filament spunbonded
fabrics. The supply side for the different types of nylon and polyester fibre is presented in the form of country production data and
company capacity by plant. In the capacity tables, note is also made by country of the different types of industrial filament (HDI,
LDI, mono) as well as filament spunbonded (FSB).
The report for 2007 contains over 400 pages together with a CD. Data years run from 1990 to 2006 for acrylic, nylon and
polyester, with estimates for 2007 and forecasts from 2008 to 2015. The supply and demand volumes are consolidated into 13
global regions in a series of unique supply/demand graphs which lead to a world overview for the main
synthetics.

Textile
Pipeline Special
First Published April 2005, and updated annually
In its usual 16-page form the 'Textile
Pipeline' service provides clients with a quarterly
review of wool, cotton and MMF demand based on PCI's
analysis of Textile Pipeline Stocks. This form of the
service is published each year in Q2, Q3 and Q4.
In Q1 each year however we expand the
scope of the service to a ‘Textile Pipeline Special’
which presents a thorough update to PCI’s ‘Red
Book’ which comes out each autumn. Thus, the ‘Textile
Pipeline Special Q1 2008’ provides an update by
region of our demand analysis in the light of full year data
for 2007. Its format is much closer to that found in the
demand section of the ‘Red Book’ and
comprises some 180 pages of regional analysis. The ‘Textile
Pipeline Special’ also includes a regional update
of mill demand and production estimates for acrylic, nylon
and polyester.
Data years shown are 2004-2007 with estimates for
2008 and forecasts from 2009 to
2010.
If you wish to place an order for ‘Textile
Pipeline Special’ or need further information

China: textile fibres
consumption 2007
First Published August 2006, and updated annually
This is the second report from PCI Fibres providing data on a provincial basis (presented as seven clusters)
for the mainland China market in textile fibres, together with Hong Kong and Macao. This report links fibre
capacity by plant for the main synthetics (acrylic, nylon, polyester) with manufactured fibre production data
(including that of the cellulosics) across the seven provincial clusters of mainland China; all set in terms of
local mill consumption for textile fibres and final consumer demand.
Of note is the demand analysis for nylon and polyester filament yarn which in this report splits out the various
components: textile filament, industrial filament, carpet filament and filament spunbonded fabrics; all set
against detailed capacity and production data, and summarised in a series of supply/demand graphs.
This report is based on the latest available data from China guided by the market knowledge of PCI Fibres
and its associate companies in the PCI Consulting Group. It is available in electronic format.

Dissolving Woodpulp and Other Cellulosic Derivatives
- A New Study
In January 2008 PCI Fibres completed a detailed analysis of the global market for dissolving woodpulp (DWP), the principal source of high purity cellulose (HPC). This 192 page multi-client report provides a thorough assessment of both the DWP industry and the markets for the products derived from DWP, from 2000 to 2007 together with forecasts to 2015. In addition, price forecasts are provided for the major types of DWP.
DWP was first used over a hundred years ago by the chemical industry as a source of HPC. Despite the maturity of this industry, it is still used today in substantial quantities to produce a diverse range of products. These include textile and industrial fibres, water soluble polymers and gums, pharmaceutical excipients, paint and ink additives, packaging film, propellants, food casings and sponges. Moreover, new uses are being found for this highly versatile polymer. The most recent development has been triacetyl cellulose (TAC) film as a protective and polarising layer in LCD display units.
Despite its use in this broad variety of products, demand for DWP declined steadily through the 1990s, due largely to the decline in viscose staple which accounted for 45% of DWP. Then in 2001 and 2002 this trend was dramatically reversed, with demand for viscose staple rising strongly, particularly in China, accompanied by substantial increases in DWP and viscose staple prices as capacity limits were reached in the last 12 months.
This study considers the factors that have led to this reversal in viscose staple and DWP demand and the outlook for both demand and prices. The study incorporates an assessment of (i) the supply and demand of the other source of HPC, cotton linter pulp, and (ii) the markets for the other cellulosic derivatives.
Part 1 examines the markets for the products made from HPC. While the focus is on viscose staple, all of the other downstream markets for cellulosic derivatives are included in this detailed analysis. For each of these market segments we provide a detailed assessment of the major factors driving demand, together with estimates of historic production as well as production forecasts to 2015, which are further disaggregated, where feasible, by major geographic regions. In addition, we also report for each market segment manufacturers’ names, locations and nameplate capacities.
Part 2 reviews past trends and the outlook for DWP supply. This begins by examining the different mills (and manufacturers) producing DWP covering commodity and speciality grades. We also investigate the factors that are driving the changes to be seen in industry structure, with an examination of the trends in the global supply of DWP. There is also an assessment of the outlook for DWP demand based on the forecasts made for the different categories of cellulosic derivative. It is also necessary to consider the other source of HPC, cotton linter pulp, which provides about 20% of global HPC supply. This assessment examines the factors determining the supply of cotton linter pulp, its geographic and product markets and the outlook for cotton linter supply in relation to the global HPC market.
Part 3 builds on the outcomes of Parts 1 and 2 by examining trends of supply/demand to 2015 for the major DWP grades, namely viscose staple grade, acetate grade (used principally to produce acetate tow, the filtration medium of cigarette filters) and ethers grade (used to produce cellulosic gums). This analysis highlights possible future deficits and/or surpluses for the major DWP grades as well as for DWP overall.
Part 4 uses the outcome of the supply/demand analyses undertaken in Part 3 to look at future trends in the prices for the major DWP grades. Historic price trends are considered before examining in more detail recent price developments and their impact on long term price differentials between the different DWP grades. Forecasts are provided of future price developments.
Part 5 considers how the price of viscose staple is expected to develop given the outlook for DWP pricing. Viscose staple prices have been largely determined by the cost of raw materials plus a conversion cost (including operating margin). This had previously led to stable prices, but all this changed over the past 12-18 months, largely as a result of structural changes. Using the data from the previous parts, we provide price forecasts for viscose staple to 2015.
Part 6 brings together the conclusions drawn from the previous parts and provides a concise summary of recent market developments as well as the outlook for this evolving and developing industry.
